Greetings I am so happy I found your weblog, I relaly found you by mistake, while I was researching on Yahoo for something else, Anyhow I am here now and would just like to say many thanks for a remarkable post and a all round enjoyable blog (I also love the theme/design), I don't have time to read through it all at the minute but I have bookmarked it and also included your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a lot more, Please do keep up the superb job.

Answer: The FTP Server has a file mask setting in it's configuration.  Client software does not usually have the ability to automatically set permissions and usually requires the user to manual select these permissions.  The Servers settings will handle the correct default settings for files.  755 sets a file as executable and probably should not be used as the default upload mask, nor should it be needed for anything but Perl / cgi scripts.
