You take out the old putty with a v shaped putty remeovr. Then you set the new glass in Carefully with aluminum shimmy type things. You then put the putty on the Inside first carefully, I did this with my finger and a surgical latex glove on because the pressure will crack the glass. Leave the aluminum shims in. Then I did the out side. After I had the putty with my finger on the inside and out, I let it get a little solid about jello consistancy then pulled the shims out. I then filled in where I pulled the shims and the window held. Good luck.
